What's with the teeth?

The True Story of George Washington’s Grill

Our first President had a mouthful of teeth that weren’t his own, but they weren’t made of wood. Washington loved drinking dark port and Madeira wine, which stained his ivories into a brownish color that gave them a wood-like appearance. Historians and textbooks then repeated the misimpression as fact long enough for it to enter popular lore. The reality is that Washington, like other elites of his era, purchased the teeth of animals and other humans, possibly including those of enslaved people, to serve as his dentures. What came out of this President’s lips was fundamental to shaping our democracy, and learning the truth about what was in his mouth adds to our understanding of it as well.
